BYU FB Player Will Miss Season
Associated Press 5Jun00 S2

PROVO, Utah -- BYU football player Jernaro Gilford has been accused of stealing athletic clothing and equipment from the school and will sit out next season as a result. The school resolved the honor code violation by allowing Gilford to continue as a student, but use the 2000 season as a redshirt year.

"He is on track to return for fall semester as a student," BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Monday. "But he won't be able to practice or play with the team until spring 2001."

Gilford was charged with burglary, third-degree felony and theft on May 16. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 18th to face the charges, which involve less than $300 worth of clothing and equipment. The maximum penalty for the charges is up to five years in prison.

According to BYU Police Lt. Greg Barber, Gilford and a friend sneaked into the locked athletic supply room in the Smith Fieldhouse through a clothing chute.

Gilford was expected to start at cornerback this fall.
