Pioneering LDS Woman Surgeon Dies

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Dr. Lenore Richards, 82, one of Utah's first women surgeons died Monday, August 14, 2000 after a brief illness. Richards, who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was named "Doctor of the Year" by the Utah State Medical in 1983.

Although Dr. Richards was born in Boston, her family moved to Bingham Canyon, Salt Lake County, when she was 5 years old. Her father was the town doctor for about 30 years.

She received her medical degree in 1943 from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia. Dr. Richards returned to Salt Lake City in late 1950 to begin private practice. She continued working in Utah until her retirement in 1983.
