NEWSFLASH: LaVell Edwards Retiring Today as BYU Football Coach

PROVO, UTAH -- BYU Head Coach LaVell Edwards will announce his retirement today in a news conference set for 1 pm MDT (3 pm EDT). According to BYU NewsNet, Edwards will still play out the 2000 season, completing his 29th season as coach of the Cougars, and ending a stellar career that will probably place him sixth among the coaches with the most career wins in college football.

Edwards had extended his contract by five years (the 2000 season is the first of those five years) but will apparently not complete all five years of his contract. Speculation last year on his successor turned up no fewer than 13 possible candidates, including leading candidates Tom Holmoe of the California Golden Bears and Gary Crowton, then offensive coach for the Chicago Bears.

The Edwards news conference will be broadcast on the Internet by BYU's NewsNet organization at http://www.newsnet.byu.edu .
