Childbirth Association Interviewed

LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA, CANADA -- When the Alberta government decided to set up a Registry of Midwives in the summer of 1998, making it illegal for unregistered midwives to practice, it made for an unpleasant situation in midwife-starved Southern Alberta.

Less than a year later, Tobi MacLeod, a member of the Lethbridge Alberta Stake, helped organise the Southern Alberta Childbirth Association. The organisation was originally formed to educate expecting parents on all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth and to help establish midwives in Southern Alberta.

Now, nearly two years later, Mary Siever, a member of the Lethbridge Alberta West Stake, is the acting president and is hoping to lead the association into a new stage in it's growth. Together with SACA's public relations representative Angie Coppieters of the Raymond Alberta Stake, Siever sees the organisation taking a more prominent role in the public eye.

The media has been very co-operative with SACA, offering many interview opportunities and posting regular seminar times. On 4 January, Global TV reporter, Mark Campbell, interviewed Siever and Coppieters and helped them broadcast their new goals. The story was aired the next afternoon.
