| LDS Seminary Stuck; Higley High Off Limits |
| Students attending LDS seminary classes on released time
from Higley High School are stuck on busses until a new seminary building
can be completed. The Church's play to lease space in the high school fell
through Tuesday when County Attorney Rick Romley ruled that leasing a
classroom to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints violated a
state law against on-campus religious instruction during school hours. |
| BYU's Varsity Theater Closes After Editing Disallowed |
| For the first time in 37 years, Brigham Young
University's Varsity Theater will dim its lights, close its curtain
and take its final bow. The formerly filled-to-capacity campus movie
house reveled in packed houses for shows such as the 1964, "Don't Go
Near the Water." Long lines of class-skipping students, who wanted to
nab up tickets for the night's feature film, have been replaced by
slow ticket sales and a combination of potential lawsuits, charges of
censorship and claims of violations of artistic expression over films
that were edited for content. |
| Wellsville Disputes with Stake President over Sham Battle |
| An announcement of the Wellsville Founders' Day and the
Sham Battle that has accompanied it since 1916 won't be inserted into ward
bulletins in the town before the celebration. But, the Founders' Day
Committee Chairman, Becky Siggard, and local LDS Stake President Louis
Lucaro disagree on why. The town had asked the stake to have the insert put
in ward bulletins, but Lucero turned them down. |
| New Periodical for Gospel Study |
| BYU's Religious Studies Center is introducing "The
Religious Educator", a new periodical for LDS religion teachers
focused on teaching methodology. "I think there are a lot of LDS
magazines aimed at the broad Mormon audience: The New Era, The
Ensign, BYU Studies. We aren't trying to re-invent the wheel; we've
picked a niche," says Dr. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Editor-in-Chief.
"All of these resources have great content to use in classes, but
there just haven't been any that focus on how to apply that content."
Each issue will also cover hard-to-teach topics, including doctrines
on family and marriage. |
| BYU announces faculty advancements in rank |
| The Brigham Young University administration has posted
its annual advancement in rank notices for faculty members throughout
campus. The appointments became effective fall semester. |
