Elder Archibald eulogized for his service, cheer

Pres. Hinckley pays tribute to 'a remarkable man'

The Eagle Gate Stake Center's chaple held a standing-room only crowd for the funeral of Elder Dallas Nielsen Archibald of the First Quorum of the Seventy on Monday, December 28th. Elder Archibald drowned in a fishing accident in the Bio Bio River about 100 miles south of Concepcion, Chile. Elder Archibald was 60 years old.

The service included eulogies by two family members and five speakers, including President Gordon B. Hinckley. President Hinckley called Archibald a 'remarkable man' and said that the Church has suffered a great loss. He also noted that Elder Archibald is the first General Authority to suffer an accidental death in 60 years, since the death of Elder J. Golden Kimball in a 1938 automobile accident near Reno, Nevada. Ironically, Elder Kimball was killed the year that Elder Archibald was born.

Also speaking at the funeral were President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust, both of the First Presidency. President Faust noted that given Elder Archibald's lengthy foreign service, the funeral would have required a much larger building, were it to be held in Brazil or in Chile.

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve and Elder Harold G. Hillam also spoke. Elder Joe J. Christensen, a member of the Presidency of the Seventy along with Elder Hillam, conducted the services.

Elder Archibalds only child, Teresa D. Archibald and his wife, Linda R. Archibald, also spoke at the funeral.
