Polygamous sect leader Samuel Bateman received an additional 24 years in prison for child sex abuse, adding to the 50-year sentence he is already serving, according to the Guardian. Bateman led a breakaway faction of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a group not affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Bateman was convicted of transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes and conspiracy to commit child abuse. Prosecutors said he claimed more than 20 wives, including girls as young as nine, and directed a network of families who followed his religious teachings.

The sentencing concludes one of the most significant prosecutions of an FLDS-affiliated leader since Warren Jeffs, who is serving a life sentence for similar crimes. Federal authorities say the case involved cooperation from multiple victims who testified against Bateman.
