A tax law expert told KUER that the LDS Church's letter to Idaho members opposing a state abortion ballot measure does not threaten the church's tax-exempt status, despite some observers questioning whether the political activity crossed legal lines. Churches are permitted to take positions on ballot measures and legislation under IRS rules.

Idaho leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent a letter to bishops and stake presidents instructing them to read a First Presidency statement from the pulpit opposing Proposition 1, which would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

The expert explained that the church is within its legal rights to engage on moral issues in politics, including directing members how to vote on ballot questions. The prohibition against political activity by tax-exempt organizations applies to candidate endorsements, not issue advocacy.
