Orem sits in Utah County, among the most heavily LDS areas in the United States, where many businesses have historically closed on Sundays. Sunday shopping has gradually expanded in the region over the past two decades as Utah's population diversified.

Some faithful Latter-day Saints expressed disappointment on social media, saying the change removes a community option that respected Sabbath observance. Others noted that Sunday business hours are now standard in most Utah retail outside a few locally owned stores.
