Samuel Bateman was sentenced Tuesday to 24 years in prison on state child abuse charges after three girls aged 11 to 14 were found in an unventilated trailer he was hauling through northern Arizona in 2022, according to KUER and AZFamily.

Bateman, a self-proclaimed prophet who led a polygamous sect, was convicted in June on the Arizona charges. He is already serving a 50-year federal sentence for orchestrating sex involving children in a separate case.

Bateman's group is a fundamentalist offshoot not affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The 2022 traffic stop led to the rescue of the girls and the collapse of his sect.
