A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit alleging that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints failed to protect a 15-year-old girl from her adoptive father, who was later convicted of raping her, according to FLOODLIT, a database of abuse cases built from court records.

U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane ruled on September 8 that Oregon negligence law imposed no legal duty on the Church to protect the girl. The lawsuit alleged that church leaders were told of the abuse but did not report it to authorities. The adoptive father was convicted of the assaults.

The case is one of multiple recent lawsuits examining how the Church handles abuse reports made to ecclesiastical leaders rather than law enforcement.
