BYU quarterback Bachmeier carries Cougars to win without star running back
October 10, 2026 at 9:02 AM MT · via The Salt Lake Tribune · Summarized by Mormon News from original reporting
Bear Bachmeier threw for 329 yards and ran for 109 as No. 8 BYU defeated Iowa State 24-10 on Friday night without injured star running back LJ Martin. The performance sets up a crucial matchup with Notre Dame next week.
Salt Lake Tribune columnist Gordon Monson questioned whether Bachmeier can sustain that level of individual production, noting the Cougars will need more offensive balance against tougher opponents. BYU improved to 5-0 overall.
The win keeps BYU in contention for a College Football Playoff berth, with the Notre Dame game potentially deciding the Cougars' postseason fate.
