The father of three women and six children killed in a 2019 cartel ambush in northern Mexico says the country's justice system has failed his family, according to the New York Post. The victims, members of a Mormon fundamentalist community near the Sonora-Chihuahua border, were traveling between family properties when gunmen opened fire on their vehicles.

In a new interview, the father criticized Mexican authorities for slow progress in prosecuting the killings and for what he described as indifference to violence affecting dual-national families in remote border regions. He said most suspects remain at large and that cartel control of the area has only strengthened since 2019.

The massacre drew international attention to the vulnerability of Mormon fundamentalist communities in Mexico, some of which have lived in the region for over a century. The victims were members of the LeBarón family, part of a polygamous offshoot community not affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
